A description of the most common data and analytics roles in Vancouver today

November 14, 2021

By Matt St.John & Will Cashman

With the constant evolution of Data & Analytics we are constantly seeing the emergence of new popular role titles. In 2012 Tom Davenport & DJ Patil called the Data Scientist the sexiest job of the 21st century and now, almost 10 years later, the popularity of this role is waning. These days the Analytics Engineer appears to be on the cusp of grabbing this prestigious title. We at the Vancouver Analytics Board thought it would be helpful to identify the most common Data & Analytics roles in Vancouver today, help to explain what they do, how we measure success of these roles, how are they different and how do they come together in the data & analytics value chain? The below table summarizes eight key data and analytics roles. Note that depending on the size and type of organization, some of the roles below may be combined into a single role.

Do you agree with these role outlines, or perhaps have a different perspective? Leave your comment below!

Please view our previous blog post to see how these roles rank with regard to importance, and how we see them growing over the next 2 years in Vancouver.
